Passion: Flower vases from the patio garden..........

Yeah, that's an orange shell...

Hibiscus, coreopsis, Arabian jasmine, mandevilla, kumquat twig..........

Kumquat, mum, ixora, mandevilla, arrowhead vine...

Well, I prefer flowers in the plant..........not in vases.......
but, the harsh sunlight would have burned them anyway, so picked them...
Some shriveled flowers from the garden........

Though: India and Pakistan, and world perception on them....

Among very well-educated lot in USA, India is known as country that produces tech support and postdoctoral research guys…anyway, things are not all that cheerful..still some think it is the country of snake charmers, savage saints….also of overwhelming population, and filth (which is true)! First part seems very proud..second not so, right?

Though we have constant conflicts with Pakistan, it kind of hurts when it’s called a ‘Terrorist country’..how can that be true? I have half a dozen of collaborators from there…and talk of gentleness, and politeness. Hardly seen in any other. In emails, first thing they will ask is about health.

No generalization..please..otherwise it will be as true as India being a country of ‘snake charmers’..

Thought: Power of ‘a piece of mind’.........

Most of we are victims of unwanted advice…and guilty of  the same..
But, sometimes, ‘a piece of mind’ doled out at the right moment, becomes the motto and savior for rest of the life..as occurred in my case..
I was 25-26 then..pursuing my Doctorate research, far way from home..and I  was perpetually-stressed…
My PhD supervisor, who was then the Head of the Biotechnology Department in IIT Guwahati, India, called me to his office...and made me sit across his table..
It was not a regular scientific discussion..rather a philosophical meeting..
He told, “I know you have some kind of stress. I will not ask what is that. Even I have my tensions. Everybody I know have some or other thing to worry about. That’s part and parcel of life. Important thing is learning how to overcome it and doing your best”. He continued “Take this life lesson of mine. Keep yourself so busy in your work that you won’t get time to nurture worries.  And you will be pleasantly surprised with the result. Consider yourself lucky to be in science and research. We will perish in decades, but the publications we make will be preserved in some library. Even, hundred years after death, someone will be reading that”.
Seven years have elapsed since then. Lots of issues…emotional, social, professional, physical have emerged, threatening to break down my spirit ..but have vanished before a strong will power...they will keep appearing, that’s the Law of life..but I have mastered the weapon to counteract those stumbling blocks in the most efficient way..…

Eight out of the 10 papers I communicate gets rejected in the first attempt..I tell my spouse,  ‘I got a rejection. Can you guess what I will do now’? Promptly he says, ‘You will send three more’. ‘Exactly’, I say.

Hope it helps..they say enthusiasm is infectious in a good way……..

Thought: The volatile subject of religion and my view..

Today, in the grocery store we met this Indian couple.
After exchanging names, first thing she asked is if we have gone to the nearby temple.
It has been six years,or may be longer, I have not gone to any temple.
Only idol I had in the house was a Lord Ganesh statuette, a wedding gift from a colleague, while working in Punjab.
But, then I had a Quran, given by a Middle Eastern neighbor… and also a Geeta booklet from some ISKON monks who caught hold of me in the University…
In San Diego, where I lived for three years, the house was near Mission San Diego, the oldest church of California. I used to visit there every other day..watching rare rain from the long and dark corridors..greeting the priest..and changing the stale flowers from the Mary statue…making  fresh bouquets from the garden flowers…In fact, the Mission is my most cherishable place in San Diego..it was a very sad moment for me to bid it good-bye..the day before leaving the city, amidst all the frenzy of packing, I went there and spent many hours, basking in its serenity..reflecting on the meaningful times..
Any way…while departing San Diego for the current city of Irvine…I had made up my mind...rest of my life should go in healthcare and environment research…religious stuffs have no place...During the endless trips to the donation box, I left those scriptures….
Hope, nobody asks me if I have visited this and that temple…rather ask me, if I have been to this or that hiking trail...and what I have noticed..
I would proudly say ‘Yes’... and sadly narrate how trees are dying, water bodies are depleting and animals are declining....and how we might curb it my exercising moderation in our consumption..

Two polar bears having friendly scuffle in the pool...
