Observation: Mulch of wood chips....adsorbent to retain moisture.........

These red shreds of wood, heaped at the base of tree root are mulch. These dyed chips are meant for retaining moisture, prevent erosion, improve nourishment and facilitate seed germination. Only recently, I learned the purpose and could not wait to share the new found nugget of information.

Since my arrival in California, I have been wondering about these wood pieces of different color and size layered on gardens, parks and street sides.

Freshly-made from chopped branches.....great sustainable use of pruned tree parts......
