To my delight, I have seen a variety of fanciful wind vanes in old California houses. Though rooster was the most common design, wind vanes of lion, cow, dolphin, whale, duck, fish and man on chariot shapes were seen too. Most of the them graced the roofs or cupolas of oceanfront houses with aesthetic and tourist attraction. Their efficacy as wind direction determinant is obsolete now, but they certainly have huge ornamental value.
