Cannabis, or better known as marijuana is a drug but mostly used foe recreational purposes.
Its component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is responsible for the neural manipulation...which leads to euphoria (heightened mood) etc....though it affects motor parts of brain...long term usage can make it an addiction.....
It used to be physician-recommended drug since long time....
But became a cult since the 60s -70s.....during the Beatles era..
Now, there is two school of opinion on its status...to make legal or not?
Whatever the outcome is....its adverse impact on youth is alarming...
We used to go to Ocean beach during our San Diego....there was an area of the beach swarmed with these addicts......the air was always redolent with its smell...reminding of Nancy Sinatra song " warm smell of coliats, rising up through the air..... ", from the track "Hotel California"...
Being a researcher, I read a bit on this plant......to know about its phytochemicals..
The plant Cannabis sativa belongs to family Cannabaceae ...other members of the family being Humulus (hops) and Celtis (hackberries).....
THC is a secondary metabolite of the plant, which it elaborates to protect self against herbivory...
Its modified form are used as drugs to treat multiple sclerosis-caused neuropathic pain, overactive bladders, spasticity, among others..
