Publishing a research paper leads to reputation in scientific circuit (envy from some colleagues as well), citations, impact factors, better job offers, sometimes monetary rewards...there are many attractions of being an author...but perhaps the most important is the satisfaction, the joy of contributing to a cause and utilizing time in the most meaningful way....
However, conceiving an idea to getting published entails mammoth amount of work...
It needs writing and rewriting, before its seems worthy-of-communication....
Months pass, in worst case a year, before any response comes...the comments might be disastrous, leading to out-right rejection...in most cases, asking for major revision...rarely, minor revision...
After all that, agonizing wait starts for final decision, if its accepted that calls for cheers!!!
Then the wait for proof correction, followed by copyright signing and then one fine morning, you see your name online, with your brain-child......time to bask in the fruit of labor!!
