Bird: Sea gulls....

Today, I learned that gulls can be of many types .... Bonaparte's, Heerman's, California, Herring, Franklin's, Thayer's, Mew, ring-billed or Western gull. I am not sure which category this one belongs to.
From my next beach visit, I will  try identifying them.

A flock on the Newport Beach...Unlike other days, they are calm and quiet today..perhaps the chilly, windy, clouds day have sapped their spirits...perhaps the grey weather limited the number of visitors thronging the beach to feed them..

It was a windy, overcast day on Newport Beach. High tide was rendering the drab day all the more grim with the huge waves.  Not only we shaking with chill, desperately clutching on to our jackets, but the gulls were also bracing to stand the whip of cold wind. This poor ring-billed gull  standing by the surf line had its feathers all ruffled to keep warm.

I was thrilled to see this majestic, intrepid gull perched on a pier in Newport Beach...and took some macro shots..

A gull gulping a large piece of bread...

Never before  had I seen gulls in their parenting role...so, when I spotted these Western gulls on the bluffs of La Jolla shore incubating their eggs it was a nice discovery...on the sloped cliffs they had laid eggs among the shrubs...the mother gulls were sitting on their clutch while the males patiently attended to them...

The empty can lying beside this bird was a clear eye-shore..I wondered whether the bird chose the site or some dimwit threw it at her..if the latter was true, why she selected place that is so close to the sidewalks, at the risk of being interrupted and harmed  by people?

The way she was getting alert and looking pleadingly every time someone passed by her, it told of anticipating threat....
hopefully, she will hatch her brood soon and may be in my next visit, I can see gull chicks :)

A gull rests on the smooth sand of Newport beach as it watches the world go by.......

Three buddies........
